U13 Program Overview
U13 (2013-2014)
The U13 Community Hockey program offers a tiered structure for players with varying levels of experience for players born in 2013 and 2014. The tiered structure makes it suitable for players with, or without, prior experience in earlier categories.
U13 - Community Stream
- Players will participate in evaluations in September which typically involve a couple of skill evaluation sessions, followed by 3 - 4 scrimmage style sessions spread over a couple of weeks. Throughout the evaluation process, players can anticipate skating with different players to help achieve the end result of having similarly skilled players placed together on teams. For more information on evaluations, please check out the Evaluations page.
- Following the completion of evaluations, tiered teams will be formed consisting of 15 to 18, including 1 or 2 goalies.
- Players can expect to have a 20 game season (including a tiering round and regular season), with 18+ practices from October through March. Ice times can be weekday evenings and/or weekends.
- All teams will complete in the Minor Hockey Week tournament in January, plus Playoffs after the regular season ends.
- Players can expect to play games throughout Edmonton and the surrounding area as part of the Edmonton Federation Hockey League (EFHL). Games last 1.5 hours, are officiated by referees, and scores are kept.
- Efforts are made to have practices located in the south east corner of Edmonton, but final location depend on the allocated ice from Hockey Edmonton.
- Team often try to play in 2-3 tournaments per year which can be in the Edmonton area, or elsewhere in Alberta, depending on availability.
- Player families can expect to contribute seed money (amounts will vary depending on what parents decide for their team) and participate in various fundraising activities to help offset the costs of additional practice ice, tournament fees, apparel, or other off-ice activities. Decisions regarding how many extra activities any given team will participate in, plus the associated budget, will be determined by the parents at the beginning of the season.
- The development focus will emphasizes skating and hockey skills tailored to the team's skill level.
- Players interested in trying out for U13 Tier 1 can find more information on the SEERA U13 Tier 1 page.
New for the 2025-26 season - Millwoods Hockey U13 Tier 1 Program
U13 - Tier 1 Competitive Stream
Millwoods Hockey is proud to announce that beginning in the 2025–26 season, we will independently operate our own U13 Tier 1 program. This will be the first time in many years that Millwoods Hockey will field a U13 Tier 1 team under its own banner. It marks a significant milestone for our association and reflects years of growth, development, and community support.
Our goal is to build on the foundation established through the former SEERA program, while enhancing the experience for players and families. We would like to express our gratitude to SEERA for the work they have put into the U13 Tier 1 program leading up to this season.
What does a U13 Tier 1 team offer?
Players selected for the Millwoods U13 Tier 1 team will benefit from:
- High-quality coaching focused on skill development, teamwork, and hockey IQ
- A competitive team atmosphere that fosters growth and resilience
- Additional development sessions, including power skating and dryland training
- Extra practices and tournament opportunities to maximize ice time and experience
- 3–5 hockey activities per week, keeping players engaged and progressing
This program is built to challenge athletes, support their development, and celebrate their passion for the game.
Head Coach Selection
- Interested candidates must email their completed Head Coach Application to Millwoods Operations Manager Kerri at seeraadmin@shaw.ca. If you are interested, please submit your completed application as soon as possible. A final decision will be made following the third round of evaluations.
Evaluations
For the 2025–26 season, Millwoods Hockey will not conduct a separate U13 tryout. Independent third-party evaluators have been retained to oversee all evaluations and are confident the team can be selected through the standard process. Please refer to the evaluation schedule to find out all possible skate times.
Players who evaluate at the tier 1 level can choose to opt out of the tier 1 advanced stream. Please communicate your preferences to the U13 Director prior to the completion of evaluations.
This approach will be reviewed for the 2026–27 season.
