MW401 Comes out on Top in Lloydminster!

MW401 Gold in Lloydminster

MW401 was excited to enter our second hockey tournament of the year by heading to the border city of Lloydminster for a weekend of fun. The tournament got underway Saturday morning Dec 14, where we came up against a tough team from Cochrane. The boys may have had a case of pool-legs as it was difficult to find their stride in a penalty filled hockey game that didn’t have a lot of flow. That being said we were able to outlast by a slim margin by taking our first win of the tournament 9-8.

For our second game, we drew the host team where the players started to find their game. They were very happy to get their second win of the tournament, which put us first in our pool. This left one more game on Saturday night.

As the tournament structure was 3 x 20 minute stop-time periods, we knew the boys may not have much gas left in the tank for a third game Saturday evening. However, just like many other times this season, the players came together as a team and played their best game yet. With a third win in a row, it set the team up for the gold medal game Sunday morning.

As fate would have it, we met Cochrane for the second time of the tournament. This gold medal game was a typical Edmonton versus Calgary rivalry as the play was back and forth for the entire contest. The team was down by one going into the third period but after a productive conversation in-between periods, the Bruins knew what they had to do. After getting a quick goal in the third period to tie it up, the team never looked back. They were able to get another goal which put them up 6 – 5 in the final minutes of the game. Although Cochrane brought their best, our team stood tall and added an empty net goal for the 7-5 gold medal win.

The coaching staff was very proud of the team’s accomplishments as we continue to take steps forward and inch closer to the team that we know we can become. On behalf of the parents and coaches, we thank Millwoods for the opportunity you are providing our young men.

Merry Christmas!

Coach Lane.
