MW401 Takes Gold at All Star Invitational!
Congratulations to MW401 on their early season achievement!
When you’re asked to coach a hockey team, the immediate expectation is you’re going to build better hockey players. However, our #1 priority this year is to build better human beings first.
We know that through the game of hockey, we can teach valuable life lessons that would not only help these athletes hone their skills on the ice, but will take these fundamentals forward throughout their entire life. Focusing on teamwork, hard work, a positive attitude, setting goals, and putting the team first, has certainly paid dividends both on and off the ice. Our participation in the All-Star Invitational at West Edmonton Mall was certainly an indication of exactly that.
The boys started Friday off hot and played as a team and won both their games to start their tournament. Just like life, Saturday provided some adversity where our efforts didn’t match our intentions and we lost our game in the morning. This allowed several teachable moments where we asked our players to come together and refocus for Saturday afternoon’s must win game to get into the finals. The boys did exactly that.
Sunday provided an opportunity for us to redeem ourselves with a rematch against a great hockey club from Beaumont, as we had lost the day before 3 to 2. We discussed the power of teamwork and that unselfish play would put us in the best position to succeed. Our players came out with their best effort when it mattered most and prevailed in winning the gold medal.
As coaches and parents, we could not be more proud of these young men as they continue to build habits that will be with them for a lifetime. This is one step in the right direction early on in the season and we certainly look forward to many more going forward. On behalf of our team, we thank Millwoods Hockey Association in creating these opportunities for our players to realize their potential.
