Tournament Rules

WELCOME!

Coaches and players, welcome to the Millwoods Hockey Spring Tournament.  Thank you for choosing our Tournament to wrap up the Season. We would like to emphasize fun, fair play and sportsmanship for the enjoyment of everyone involved, especially the players. Please respect the following rules throughout the Tournament.
 

PLEASE CHECK YOUR TEAM IN!

 
Please check in with the Tournament Representative at the arena “prior” to your first game to pick up your tournament  SWAG.
Head coach has to check in each game to sign off on the gamesheet and collect dressing room key.


 GENERAL
Except where otherwise stated, all Hockey Canada and Hockey Edmonton rules apply.  All players must comply with Hockey Alberta criteria for the age/date of birth relevant to the different divisions.

  • Any match or fighting penalty will result in players or coaches’ immediate suspension from the tournament.
  • Abuse directed toward the game or Tournament officials will not be tolerated.  Abusive individuals may be asked to leave the Arena, if deemed necessary, or may be suspended from the tournament.
  • Disciplinary matters will be referred to the Disciplinary Committee who will rule on the matter as soon as possible. The Disciplinary Committee members can be reached by emailing mwhatourney@shaw.ca
  • The decision of the Disciplinary Committee is final.
  • Two game pucks will be supplied by the tournament for each game.
  • Teams should bring their own warm up pucks.
 
 
REFEREES
Referees are paid at the end of each game by the tourney rink managers.  Teams do not need to pay the refs. Referees will submit the game sheet and any write ups after each game. Please ensure your Head Coach or Manager collects a copy as they will not be provided once the tourney is over.
 
TIME/SCOREKEEPERS
Millwoods Hockey will be providing the Time and Score keepers for each game.

AFFILIATIONS AND TEAM ROSTER
Team Rosters were submitted prior to attending the tournament to the tournament director. All eligible players must be listed on the Hockey Canada team roster and approved. Hockey Edmonton and EFHL affiliation rules apply with a reminder that teams may not dress more players than listed on their approved Hockey Canada team roster.
 
DISCIPLINE
Discipline matters will be referred to the Discipline Committee who will rule on the matter as soon as possible. The decisions of the Discipline Committee are final.

TEAM COLORS       
In all cases, the HOME team is dark and the VISITOR is white


PLAYER OF THE GAME AWARDS – Heart and Hustle/MVP Award
 
 ● Following each game, players are to line up on their respective blue lines.
● At centre ice near the timekeeper box, a coach from each team will award one Player of the Game and one MWP award to a player from the opposing team at center ice.
 ● No player shall be awarded more than one Player of the Game or MVP toque during the tournament.
 
**Please consult with the opposing coach before finalizing your selection to avoid a player receiving the award twice**

GAME LENGTH AND FORMAT

  • The following game formats will be used in the tournament.
  • If a team is unable to start the game ten minutes after its scheduled start time, they will forfeit the game.
  • All goals shall be recorded on the game sheet and shall count towards a team’s total (for and against) should the need to break a tie in the standings occur.  There shall be a goal differential of no greater than 5 shown on the scoreboard.
  • When 5 minutes of scheduled ice time remains and more than 2 minutes of game time remains in the third period, the clock will be reset to 2 minutes. Games cannot run past their allotted times

U9 DIVISION

  • Rink Dividers – half ice, divider system set up across centre ice
  • 2-25-minute halves,
  • 4 vs 4 plus goalie, 2 min warm up, 1 minute in between periods
  • Blue Pucks
  • There will be no scorekeeping, no stats
  • Faceoff start of game and second half
  • Off-side & Icing – None
  • Goaltender Freezes Puck- Offending team backs off and goalie gives puck to teammate – play resumes
  • Goal is Scored – Scoring team backs off, goalie pulls puck out of net resume play.
  • U9 Shift Length: 1.5 minutes; buzzer is set to 1.5 intervals, on buzzer players leave puck, go to bench and new players enter the ice and continue to play.

U11 DIVISION

  • 1-hour time slot
  • 3 – 13-minute stop time periods- 
  • When 5 minutes of scheduled ice time remains and more than 2 minutes of game time remains in the third period, the clock will be reset to 2 minutes. Games cannot run past their allotted times
  • Please note there will be a 5-minute warm-up.
  • Minor penalties will be 2 minutes

U13 DIVISION

  • 1 hour 30-minute game time with 1 – 15-minute stop time period and 2 – 20-minute stop time periods -
  • When 5 minutes of scheduled ice time remains and more than 2 minutes of game time remains in the third period, the clock will be reset to 2 minutes. Games cannot run past their allotted times
  • Please note there will be only a 5-minute warm-up.
  • Minor penalties will be 2 minutes.

U15 DIVISION

  • 1 hour 30-minute game time with 1 – 15-minute stop time period and 2 – 20-minute stop time periods - withless than  5 minutes remaining in regulation time , the game the clock will drop to 2-minute mark of the third period.
  • Please note there will be only a 5-minute warm-up.
  • Minor penalties will be 2 minutes.
U18 DIVISION
  • 2 hours  25-minute game time with 3 – 20-minute stop time periods 
  • When 5 minutes of scheduled ice time remains and more than 2 minutes of game time remains in the third period, the clock will be reset to 2 minutes. Games cannot run past their allotted times
  • Minor penalties will be 2 minutes.
 

TIED GAMES (ROUND ROBIN PLAY) ALL DIVISIONS

For all Divisions the following overtime format will apply to round robin play:
  • All round robin games tied at the end of regulation play will proceed to a 4-player shoot-out, with no player allowed to shoot twice.
  • All players except the shooter and the opposing goalie must remain on the bench.
  • If the game is still tied after 4 shooters, the teams will continue to take alternate shots until a winner is decided.
  • In the event a player was serving a penalty at the end of the third period. He/she can not be part of the original 4 shooters but can participate in the shoot out if undecided after the original 4 shooters.
  • Visiting team will shoot first.
  • In the unlikely event that all players have taken a turn and the game remains tied. Players will take turns shooting again until the game is decided.
  • Shoot out goals must be recorded on the game sheet as “SO” in place of time scored, and each goal must be recorded by the timekeepers.
  • Teams will be awarded 3 points for a win. If teams are tied after the round robin event; the team with the lowest penalty minutes through out the round robin will advance. Goals for/against will only be considered if penalty minutes are tied as well.
Please consider that this tournament is focused on providing an enjoyable experience for all teams and players to wind up their season. Situations may occur where a team has been unintentional “miss-tiered”. Running up scores will not provide better access to the final games. 
 

DIVISION STANDINGS

All divisions with 4 teams will play a three-game round robin format.  The top two teams after round robin play will play in the “A” final and the last two teams will play in the “B” final.
Points will be awarded in the round robin as follows:
  • Win – 3 points
  • Shootout win – 2 points
  •  Shootout loss - 1 point
  • Loss in regulation time – 0 points
** READ above for teams tied after round robin the team with lowest penalty minutes will advance**
 

FINAL GAME FORMAT

U9 – games on Sunday, the Director will contact the Head Coach to schedule the game time later Saturday evening.
 
U11 Divisions
  • Final games will consist of 3 periods “stop time” 15-15-15
U13 and U15 Divisions
  • Final games will consist of 3 periods “stop time” 15-20-20.
U18 Division
  • Final games consist of 3 periods "stop time" 20-20-20.
 

OVERTIME FORMAT - FINAL GAMES – ALL DIVISIONS

  • All final games ending in a tie after regulation time will be decided by a 5-minute overtime period (stop time).
  • If the game remains tied after the 5-minute period; the shootout format will take place as noted in the round robin play.
